Chocolate, The Key to Happiness
It’s that time of year when our chocolate consumption can go up, I know mine does. Every morning from the 1st of December until Christmas Day I get to open my advent calendar to discover a tasty piece of chocolate.
Now some people may just see a calorie loaded chocolate square… But I see a piece of happiness, not just the amazing mouth-watering taste, but I see the chemical process that this little piece of chocolate will create in my body.
Before I explain what chocolate has to do with happiness, I will have to go a bit science geek on you.
The endocannabinoid system
We all have an endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for many processes in our body. The ECS is constantly working to bring about a state of balance in our bodies and minds, creating homeostasis.
Ageing, environmental and lifestyle factors can all impact this system making it less efficient leading to an increase in inflammation, pain, anxiety, sleep problems, hormone disruption and exhaustion to name a few.
The good news is that there are many ways to improve ECS system and help keep it running smoothly.
We all know that a healthy lifestyle will always help improve your health but there are a few other things you can do too, including eating chocolate. Yes chocolate!
A few of my favourite ways to help improve my ECS is to take a daily dose of CBD, run and eat chocolate.
How does chocolate improve the endocannabinoid system?
One of the main endocannabinoids discovered is Anandamide and is known as the bliss molecule. It is naturally produced on demand by the body. The more of this bliss molecule we have in our bodies, the happier we feel. Taking CBD, exercise and eating chocolate all increase the amount of anandamide in our system.
When anandamide is produced it is rapidly broken down by an enzyme called Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase (FAAH). Just like CBD, eating chocolate blocks anandamide’s metabolization, keeping that wonderful bliss molecule in our system longer and in turn making us feel happier for longer.
This may be the reason many people report a feeling of wellbeing and happiness when they eat chocolate.
It is important to note that only quality dark chocolate or Cacao will do this, but I feel it is still a great reason to get that extra bit of chocolate down you.
The next time you eat that bar of chocolate you may think of it like I do, and smile at that little square of happiness.
